AC/DC first formed in “the land down under” more than 30 years ago by Malcolm and Angus Young. The band offered a unique guitarheavy hard rock sound for their listeners and after a few years their music began to catch on with fans in their native Sydney Australia. In 1975 following an increasing buzz from listeners and a revamped band lineup AC/DC who picked up their name from a sewing machine label released their first album High Voltage.

Following their debut release AC/DC has found itself on a steady stream of rock and roll success releasing more than 20 albums to date many of which have went on to become multiplatinum sellers. The most widely recognized of these is 1980s Back in Black which has sold more than 42 million copies worldwide becoming the second highestselling album of all time. AC/DC have also produced some of the most memorable and widely recognized rock singles of all time over the years. Among these are the everpopular Highway to Hell You Shook me All Night Long and Stiff Upper Lip.

On top of their commercial success AC/DC have garnered a reputation from critics and fans alike as one of the most influential bands in rock music history. To date they have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide ranked fourth on VH1s list of the “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock” and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

In October of 2008 the band is set to release their twentieth studio album entitled Black Ice.

A Young Kids Guide To Impressing Your Parents With Your Rock Music

Face it: many have been the times when youre lying there in bed quietly listening to your favorite band what constitutes quietly is of course full volume and your mom your dad or worse yet both break into your private domain and yell at you to turn that damn music doooowwwwn!! and to stop listening to those worthless bums. But cmon isnt there something you can do to start changing your parents minds about what you hold most dear?

Sure! Impress them. Knowing what to say to your parents in these cases and learning what interesting little piece of rock star history you can shine a light on for this purpose is of the utmost important when trying to impress dear ole mom and dad. There are many wonderful stories and scrumptious bits of data that will just have your head brimming with enthusiasm just waiting for your parents to once again try to tell you off.

Going down a list of bands Ill mentiono a couple of things you might want to ponder and/or do some more research about:

Queen:

Freddie Mercury: Ealing Art College graphic illustration
John Deacon: Chelsea College electronics degree
Roger Taylor: first studied dentistry at London Hospital Medical College and left it in order to get a BSC in Biology at London Polytechnic
Brian May: this would be the pice de rsistance here. He studied at Imperial College London and got his degree in astrophysics. In 2007 he completed his PhD. and was also named Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University.

The Rolling Stones:

Mick Jagger: studied economics at the famed London School of Economics but then something got in the way. Namely the Stones.
Charlie Watts: went to Harrow Art School became a commercial artist
Ron Wood: like Freddie Mercury he also studied at Ealing Art College.

Kiss:

Paul Stanley: went to Manhattan School of Music and Art and also to Bronx Community College but gave it up when music started to rear its head.
Gene Simmons: Richmond College got a degree in education and is fluent in Hungarian German English and Hebrew and also speaks some Spanish I know that from personal experience.

The Police:

Sting: went to Northern Counties Teachers Training College got a degree in education
Andy Summers: UCLA studied classical guitar
Stewart Copeland: went to California Western University and UC Berkeley

Van Halen:

Alex Van Halen: briefly went to Pasadena City College to study music
Michael Anthony: studied music at Pasadena City College

Sheryl Crow:

University of Missouri B.A. in Education Music Composition and Performance

Bon Jovi:

David Bryan: was studying PreMed at Rutdgers University and left it to go to Juilliard music instead

We can also add a roster of people who have studied at Berklee College of Music in Boston MA:

John Myung John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy

Dream Theater
Steve Vai
Tim Owens Ripper Owens
Al Pitrelli
Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford Aerosmith
Steve Smith Journey
Will Calhoun Living Colour

So there you have it kids. A small list which can undoubtedly be expanded with some research on your part. But always remember something: its really not that important to know if they studied this or that because what they play still reaches your heart. If you parents need some sort of college degree for them to pass favorable judgement on a person then thats something that perhaps they should have learned in college that its wrong.

A Landmark For The Who Tommy Set The Stage For 1970s Rock

The late 60s were a transitional moment for rock and roll. Many bands were attempting to stretch their wings and experiment with the kinds of material that they could release to the public. Some bands turned to composing with orchestras in mind while others focused on spreading a social or political message.

Some groups however felt that they needed to add a more spiritual dimension to their music and construct a narrative that would allow them to discuss the concepts that filled their heads. For The Who Tommy was their first sustained attempt to expand on the promise of the minirock vignettes they had released on previous records.

Tommy is the story of a deaf blind and mute child who is born normally but has his senses stolen from him after witnessing the murder of his mothers new lover at the hands of his suddenly returning father. The tale deals with the attempts by Tommys family to return him to normalcy as well as the inner psychological journey undergone by the title character. Once cured Tommy sets up a cultlike organization with himself at its head and he attains great power only to have it taken away. The end result is his own spiritual enlightenment.

In todays entertainment culture this plot may not sound all that risqu but when it was released in 1969 there were many who felt that the entire scenario was far too relentlessly dark. The themes of child abuse religious manipulation and spirituality were new territory for rock music. Some of these criticisms were made quite vocally but they were countered by an equal number of people who celebrated this new form of artistic expression dubbing it rock opera. In terms of records sales for The Who Tommy was a smash and remained on the charts for 126 weeks.

Tommy gave Townshend a release for the spiritual topics related to his tutelage under Meher Baba that felt he needed to write music about. The entire production was scored for the orchestra and then later brought to the silver screen in 1975 as a film starring the lead singer of the group Roger Daltrey. The movie was a critical and commercial success and Daltrey was also instrumental in bringing Tommy to Broadway in the early 90s. This rock opera continues to be regarded as an important part of rock and rolls maturation process and a harbinger of the concept albums which would flood record stores in the 1970s.

A History Of Rock And Roll Music

The immediate origins of rock and roll lie in the late 1940s and early 1950s through a mixing of the genres of blues country Ramp;B folk and gospel music. Alan Freed a disc jockey based in Cleveland Ohio is generally credited with first using the phrase rock and roll in 1951 though the phrase was in constant use at time in lyrics of Ramp;B songs of the time. The phrase rocking and rolling has its origins in slang for dancing or having sex. Many early rock and roll hits were rewrites of earlier Ramp;B or blues songs. Black music was still taboo on radio stations so producers and artists began making white versions of black music. In 1955 Bill Haleys Rock Around the Clock became the first rock and roll song to top the charts. The song became one of the biggest hits in history and hordes of teenagers began flocking to hear Haley and his band The Comets. Blues would continue to inspire rock for decades with great acts like Cream The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin drawing their inspiration from musicians like Robert Johnson and Skip James. Rock and Roll influenced lifestyles fashion attitudes and language. It also appeared at a time when racial tensions were coming to a head in the United States the music contributed to the civil rights movement as both black and white teenagers followed the music. It was a fresh sound which spawned fresh ideas and approaches which paved the way for the swinging sixties.

If I had the power I would change the title of the new Soundside CD from “Seconds to Sunrise” to “Working Man’s Soundside.” No not as some type of homage to the Grateful Dead or their album of the same name but because in today’s segmented music scene dominated by generic suburban pop ring tone rap for real and fake ghettos and indie rock for the collegeeducated hipster there is a definite dearth of good honest rock and roll. The kind of rock that gets you through a day of loading boxes onto palettes or house painting. Rock for the unpretentious for folks that work in delis or hang sheet rock. Soundside brings back the old school rock sound hard but not metal melodic but not Justin Timberlake and with a touch of grunge minus the tortured angst.

If this Seconds to Sunrise had come out twentyfive years ago they would have been hailed as the new gods of power pop or new wave by way of Cheap Trick. In other words it’s chock full of hard rock hooks pop sensibility and pogobeat rhythms along with sensitive low key acoustic guitarlaced moments. “Back To The Beginning” kicks things off with a radio friendly two chord rock anthem that has a danceable groove over which Rich Arcati sings nostalgically of all night partying fun: “I reminisce the time I made us it’s been awhile but how could I forget… who remembers what time we got home? / It’s just another morning that I can never wake up… Back to the beginning of our lives.” The music here is kick ass rock and roll with a crisp backbeat and bass and guitars hitting all the right marks.

“With You” starts out softly with acoustic guitar and voice. When the rest of the band comes in it’s on a lower intensity musical plane mixing the emotional sincerity of a ballad and driving rock. This and most of the CD are carried by front man Arcati with his vocal mix of Eddie Vedder and Robert Plant at his least screechy and guitarist Dan Reardon. “Living in the Rain” flips the script on the classic rock song form of soft to loud by giving a heavy metal blast of an intro followed by low volume acoustic guitar and voice. This gives way to a section of melodic countrytinged rock that would fit in between Sheryl Crow and Nickelback on a VH1 set. Its companion piece on the CD is “Beautiful Life” a straight rock ballad with touches of violin and cello and a simple piano riff underscoring the vocal line.

“Creepin’ In My Mind” is another example of fullon rock intensity with a heavy guitardriven groove straight from the old Detroit rock city sound of Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop. This song and the others on this filler free CD is locked and propelled by Karina McMahon and Matt Fox on drums and bass respectively. “Stuck In A Memory” rocks in a loping hard rock headbanging almostwaltz that nods to Led Zeppelin. This changes into a power pop chorus that is at once sweet and savage yet tasteful and true. In fact this could be said about the whole Seconds to Sunrise. Soundside draws from the wellspring of guitar driven kickoutthejams rock giving the listener the musical equivalent of an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay. No bones about it Soundside is definitely maximum rock and roll.

Away From The Sun is the latest release from Rock Sensation 3 Doors Down and I can only think of one word to describe it and that word is AWESOME!

This is the groups 2nd album and follows their spectacular debut album The Better Life. I have to admit that I was somewhat skeptical of this album because of the success of their first release as it is very difficult to follow such a huge success like that. A lot of times there is just that let down because the expectations are so high. I have to say though Away Form The Sun definitely lives up to the expectations.

Unfortunately it is not everyday that I get a CD from an artist that I can just pop in and comfortably listen to from beginning to end. There is usually a song or two that I just cannot force myself to get through. Not at all the case with Away From The Sun. Every track is enjoyable and was pretty easy for me to listen to from start to finish.

One of the refreshingly nice things about this CD is the way all of the participating artists seem to be really enjoying themselves. Combine that with the overall presentation and you have one of 3 Doors Downs most impressive releases ever.

If you are not a 3 Doors Down fan this is a CD your collection flat cannot be without. In fact this is one of those CDs that you do not even have to be a fan of 3 Doors Down or even Rock to know is good. This is just good music. Period.

While the entire CD is really very good the truly standout tracks are When I’m Gone track 1 The Road I’m On track 3 and I Feel You track 7.

My SmoothLee Bonus Pick and the one that got Sore …as in “Stuck On REpeat” is track 5 Running Out Of Days. This is a great track!

Away From The Sun Release Notes:

3 Doors Down originally released Away From The Sun on Nov 12 2002 on the Universal Records label.

CD Track List Follows:

1. When I’m Gone 2. Away From The Sun 3. The Road I’m On 4. Ticket To Heaven 5. Running Out Of Days 6. Here Without You 7. I Feel You 8. Dangerous Game 9. Changes 10. Going Down In Flames 11. Sarah Yellin’ 12. untitled hidden track

3 Doors Down: Brad Arnold vocals; Matt Roberts Chris Henderson guitar; Todd Harrell bass. Additional personnel includes: Josh Freese drums. Recorded at London Bridge Seattle Washington; Greenhouse Burnaby Canada and Ocean Way Studios Hollywood California.

You Are In A Band All Amped Up And Ready To Perform. The Band Mates Are Present Ready To Rock For Everyone. Everything Is Readywell Almost. The On

You are in a band all amped up and ready to perform. The band mates are present ready to rock for everyone. Everything is readywell almost. The only left missingwhich is the most important of all would be your audience. Every band or musician needs their audience especially when performing. They need people to listen and enjoy their music in order to give their music its worth and at the same time the audience can appreciate the music and spread the love to others.

Getting enough people to watch your gig may be quite difficult if you do not know what to do. Hunting for your audience is part of music business promotions since promotions would be of great help in making you a hit in this music business.

Many musicians that are starting usually miss the easy opportunities in getting people in the seats of their upcoming gigs. There are some inexpensive ways in promoting your garage band indie band or just yourself which would not be too expensive. Simple and cost effective methods are essential when promoting on a budget.

Word of mouth is free. This would be the first step in boosting up your band and in music business promotions as a whole. Basically everyone in the band needs to take a proactive role in getting the word out on future shows and gigs. Word of mouth works by telling friends family coworkers and anyone else your band knows that may be interested in your genre of music. The pyramid style works: have your friends tell their friends and so on. It can be very surprising when you get to see the results of spreading your music gig to others.

Flyers play a big role for starting musicians out there. This type of music business promotion is cheap and can be done by having them printed out at any local copy store in the area. A cost effective strategy flyers contain all the information people need in watching you play. Design a simple flyer with the band title logo or artwork genre of music original or cover tunes date and time of show the website if there is contact information and the phone number and name of the venue where you will be playing. For this handing them to the bar and/or owner may be the best choice so that you yourself can be sure that the flyers will be seen by patrons of the club. It would also help if flyers are pinned on bulletin boards at music stores and to places where your potential crowd hangs out.

After this try and contact any local newspapers or any music or entertainment magazines in your area. They usually have weekly band listings for free so use this to your advantage. Concert calendars on the Internet would help too. They also list concert dates and gigs so find out the popular websites that has more traffic. Remember the more fans you get to the show the better your chance of getting booked there again and hopefully build your music career.

Yes Yes Album Rock Music CD Review

Yes released their most recent album entitled Yes Album.

It’s a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I’m more than happy to announce thats exactly what I must say about this one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all with each song standing tall on it’s own.

Yes Album has a pleasantly varied mix of 9 tracks that are very well written and brilliantly performed songs by these clearly superb musicians. Most of the songs display a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are their own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions of love and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

Im of the opinion that Yes Album is certainly some of this groups best work in a few years. A totally enjoyable CD and an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up because its a collection that even the casual Rock fan can appreciate and enjoy.

While this entire album is really very good the truly standout tunes are track 3 Starship Trooper: Life Seeker track 4 Ive Seen All Good People: Your Move / All Good People and track 9 Clap.

My Bonus Pick and the one that got Sore …as in “Stuck On REpeat” is track 1 Yours Is No Disgrace. This is a great track!

Yes Album Release Notes:

1. Yours Is No Disgrace 2. Clap 3. Starship Trooper: Life Seeker / Disillusion / Wurm 4. I’ve Seen All Good People: Your Move / All Good People 5. Venture A 6. Perpetual Change 7. Your Move single version 8. Starship Trooper: Life Seeker single version 9. Clap previously unreleased studio version

With the release of Tormato their artistic excellence is on full display as they have once again delivered a brilliant collection of tracks that could very well be their best work to date.

It’s a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I’m more than happy to announce thats exactly what I must say about this one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all.

The nice thing about a CD like this is with this level of talent even if Rock isnt your favorite style you still cant help but appreciate the greatness of the musicians.

Listen and I think youll agree that the song choices are excellent the production is outstanding and Yes is clearly a group that is in top form.

While the entire CD is outstanding the truly standout tunes are track 3 Dont Kill The Whale track 9 On The Silent Wings Of Freedom and track 18 Everybodys Song.

My Bonus Pick and the one that got Sore …as in “Stuck On REpeat” is track 1 Future Times. Wow!
